SEER Ratings Explained: The Basics You Need To Know

What is SEER Rating?

The SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency rating or ratio. It is a measure of the energy efficiency of a central air conditioning and heating system. The SEER rating stands for the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, which is the ratio of cooling output in British thermal units (Btu) to total input heat, expressed in watts at an ambient temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s a measure of how well a cooling system works, and it is used in climate zones 1-4.

SEER ratings are determined by measuring inputs and outputs of a central air conditioner, heat pump, or a ductless mini-split system over one year. Once that year has passed, the annual performance factor for each component is calculated, including power consumption rates for outdoor condenser fans, compressor electricity usage, auxiliary power usage, indoor fan electricity usage, evaporator fan electricity usage, and compressor operating time. The parts with the highest power consumption rates are then weighted more heavily in determining the final SEER rating.

In addition to saving energy costs, a high SEER rating can also help minimize your environmental footprint by reducing the need for Power Plants to be built to keep up with demand. With this system, the higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit is at generating cool air in summer. The lowest possible number is 10.0, which represents an older or less energy-efficient unit that often has additional issues like high electric bills or breakdown problems.

What is a Good SEER Rating?

A typical solid-state electronic air conditioner has a SEER rating of 14 or higher. A three-star SEER system, for example, can use 30% less energy than an older two-star system. That means lower monthly bills.

Additionally, units with higher ratings are better at handling hot days because they provide greater capacity for heat transfer to your home. That means that when it’s 100 degrees outside, you’ll have cool air inside and you’ll be enjoying greater indoor comfort.

Central air conditioners with high SEER ratings are more energy-efficient and save money on utility bills. In addition, they produce less greenhouse gas emissions than older units that have low SEER ratings. These units also last longer and use less power to produce the same amount of cooling as an older unit that has a lower SEER rating does.
